Cherishing the Worn: Lessons from the Potter’s Vessels

The master potter has vessels of many uses in his own household. Some are for common daily uses, others for special occasions or particular uses. What vessel are you?

The potter scrubs out the inside for another use. The outside may be charred, worn, or scratched. The glaze might chip or be scraped. Yet the inside is whole. It can be cleaned and will not leak. It is worthy as a vessel to transfer refreshments again. Although not obvious to others the potter knows.

Vessels are used at the potters pleasure, these common vessels are cherished for their daily usefulness. The potter has a mindful awareness of those of daily use. Although rugged and worn, they are more intimate with the potter. They are more familiar than those kept pristine or on display.

Those vessels are cased away from the risks of daily use. We who are for daily use are the worn and ragged, we see those looking from the outside. Those unfamiliar with the work of the potter don’t recognize his most useful vessels. They pass over them because of their wear. We who know the potter’s daily use understand his value in determining our usefulness. We stay gratefully his, even though others often don’t recognize us or understand.
